My goal is to challenge you to style only what’s already in your closets for this season!

There is tremendous pressure for everyone to buy new clothes just because a new season is starting. Numerous influencers earn a living by encouraging people to purchase new clothes that fit a current aesthetic. Think about what you personally do when winter rolls around – do you recycle old clothes from last winter and wear those? Do you throw away or donate clothes that are out of style and do not match the current aesthetic? Or do you choose to keep those clothes and find new ways to style them?

I am guilty of donating clothes that I no longer want. The reason for this is that I used to be the kind of shopper who would buy clothes solely for aesthetic reasons. Now, I am someone who cares deeply about sustainability and the brands I buy from, as well as how I will wear my clothes years from now and what they are made of.

This winter, I challenge you to shop differently – by not shopping at all. This may be a struggle for some to follow, but try to resist giving in too easily when it comes to spending money on clothing. I know it can be hard, especially if you are in school, ESPECIALLY fashion school, where you are around fashion icons every day or people who just wear something that makes you think “I want that… I want to dress like that.”

Let’s make an impact this semester and stand up to fast fashion. It can be tempting to visit the mall and browse the latest collections from Zara or Dillard’s, but let’s make this November a season of reworking old clothes and fashionably styling them. Let’s encourage ourselves and others to follow along and share how they would style their past-season clothes.

My favorite way to wear old clothes and make them in-season and on-trend is to accessorize. I love wearing jewelry such as earrings, bracelets, and necklaces to stand out. I like adding in belts, curling my hair, wearing bold lipstick, and a vintage designer purse to complete the outfit. As the month progresses, I will continue to capture content featuring outfits that I have chosen to put together, to inspire others.
