If shopping online has taught me anything, it’s that sustainability doesn’t have to be this complicated. Depop is virtually just thrift shopping, but online. In this blog, I will teach you how to find affordable and stylish options on second-hand shopping apps such as Depop. This method can be applied to any other app, such as Poshmark, Mercari, and eBay.
First, could you download these apps and set up an account for each? After that, you will need to curate your “for you page” with suggestions from the app based on your likes. Your likes and saves feed what the app suggests to you, so make sure you like things that are enticing to you. Now, could you make a list of your favorite designers and brands? I recommend thinking of bigger-name brands first, then eventually you will write down the names of some obscure ones as well. For example, on my list, it is “Dior, Gucci, Prada, and Chanel.”
After you make your list, you will figure out which exact product you would like to look for. It may be interesting to you just to type in the brand name and start searching, but that takes too much time to sort through all those items, and you could fall victim to a scam. What I mean is that there are some users online who post fake products, and if you are not careful, you could be scammed by purchasing what you thought they were listing. For example, once I accidentally bought fake UGG boots without realizing the account was a scammer. Please always make sure you are buying from someone who has excellent reviews, many past reviews, good communication, and a consistent profile.
Next, my favorite keyword is “vintage.” I will usually search for keywords such as “vintage Gucci top black,” “vintage Prada shoulder bag,” or “vintage Chanel upcycled brooch.” The more specific you are, the more listings will pop up that match what you want to buy and are interested in. From then on, you can find items of both excellent quality and uniqueness. Most items on these applications are older and hard to find. This enables you to find your own sense of style and what kinds of brands and things you would like to purchase.
